Another monument restored

Paying his gratitude to both UNESCO and Swiss
government for their joint venture the Deputy Bamyan Provincial Governor, Mr.
Balaghi urged UNESCO to consider similar plans for the historical monuments
located in other than Bamyan Town due to their historical and cultural
significance. He made this request in the “Handling Ceremony” of
Khajasabz Push Shrine at the Gorwana-e-Bala, Bamyan Town, the restoration
program of which started in April ending in July 2012 by UNESCO with financial
assistance of the Swiss Government. “Moreover part of the project scheme
was to support the “Afghanistan through the eyes of Afghans” photo
exhibition either organized in 10 provinces of the country including Bamyan.
Some of the photos are now showcased in Switzerland at an exhibition, “outlined
by Mr. Nicolas Philanther, the Deputy Swiss Ambassador for Pakistan &
Afghanistan in the ceremony.
Amongst the
speakers was the Mayor of Bamyan, Mr. Fitrat, who was more in the favor of the economic benefits of
such attempts beings the prime need of the people. He thinks projects likewise
can be a help for the sustainable tourism development in the region since there
are tourists who wish to explore the rich culture of this region, but he laid
emphasis on development projects along with the cultural preservation/
protection projects which include the establishment of parks, hotels,
supporting tour agencies, tour guide associations so that more people are
employed in this industry and tourists have basic services & amenities. Mr. Reza Ibrahim, the CEO of Bamyan Tourism Development Board
through his presentation on the historical and cultural monuments in all parts
of the province asked for the continued support and assistance of organizations
like UNESCO, etc. and Swizz Government to work more in this region where the
central government of the country is less interested for any development or
cultural revival projects. “However, the awareness of local communities in preservation & protection values of these monuments is of crucial significance, ” stated by Mr. Ibrahim.
It is how it looks now!
Ms. Sarah Naushadi, the
UNESCO Coordinator to Afghanistan believes the real challenge is how the
provincial government and the relevant department along with the local
communities take the responsibility in protection of these monuments for their
unique importance and cultural values. On this note, the guests including
Deputy Provincial Governor, Heads of Department of Information & Culture,
National Environment Protection Agency, Bamyan Municipality,  the
International NGO representatives, Bamyan University Students, the local
council members of Gorwan-e-Bala and journalists, witnessed the opening
ceremony of the shrine and its handling to the Department of Information &
Culture by the Deputy Swiss Ambassador & UNESCO coordinator.
How would I miss the ceremony?
