Facing the odds…
Believe it or not, this tests your perseverance!
Lost in the memory of
being with his family and enjoying the family union, pleasure of love,
togetherness and comfort, James Franco acting as the role of Aron Ralston in
the movie 127 hours dreams the Elysian of peace and happiness, where he enjoys
recording his sister play piano, his parents smile and he being in peace. His
character inspires us with the true meaning of hope, perseverance and
commitment to fight the odds of life no matter what consequences and losses
come our way, but what matters is to stand tall and make our moves to defeat
those unpredictable odds.
He strolls
around communing with nature, feeling deep the nature, the rocks and air
blowing against his face. Being relieved and calm, having no worldly worries;
all of a sudden a boulder gives a tragic turn to his fate by getting him stuck
between it and a crevasse. Astounded at the unkind face of his fate, James was
numb not believing he is left with no way of getting out. This was a true test
of his sports spirit and a test of his passion for a healthy and happy life. The
Pandora box of his fate was unlocked; all he had to do was to adopt a can-do
attitude and scratch the unkind face of his fate by not surrendering and
committing to make his way out.
During the movie
he reminds us that man is made up of life commitments to fight the evils, the
durable pains, the life reality _ maybe bitter, challenges and odds or else
failure and regret will be the lasting fate. His life was at stake, his body
languishing, and his voice sizzling but his spirit never wavered. Despite
having some liters of water and being unable to make full move of his body, he
has the gleam of hope to be among his family members and enjoying the nature
to the full. He reminds us that if we lose hope, we lose every other thing as
the sun always sinks in west but it rises again and outshines the world;
similarly, man has to rise each time darkness falls over him. Having that in
head James never let despair take over. He knows he can make his way out only
if he decides to live since man is made of his thoughts; what happens tomorrow
is what we think today.
At a point the sweltering heat of sun
beams relieve him and he feels the real warmth at his feet and the only living
being he sees is a bird flying over him caring not about his infliction and
fatigue. “You can make it”, he screams out. Because man is born free and being
part of his nature & human desire to be free and man doesn’t like being
trapped whether it is under a rock, behind the bars or at their duty stations.  His giggles portray (2) strange feelings at a
time; his motivation to life and despair. He depicts the true character and
life of Aron at his best. His smile is rather his surprise to what God intended
to test out of him.  James makes every
possible attempt to set free without wrangling over his situation & getting
impotent.
… and he is surprised at what God indented to test him out!
Recalling his
memory from leaving home to getting stuck, he learnt he was intended to face it
and all he had to do was to grapple with this boldly, patiently and
intelligently. He is truly in life-or-death situation.  He knows he will be successful only if his
spirit does not let him down. This is true since in our life, we can be
successful if we are successful by our mind and soul and giving up the spirit
means giving up every other thing.
Facing the
intense exhaustion, thirst and hunger, he finally decides to do what he was set
by God to do _ decide to live or give up! He gets a knife and chops his hand
off to set it free. This is a bold move to face life with new thought and
approach. He decides not to surrender but to make a move.  In our life also we sometimes need to make
bold moves for greater things; we may trip over a crack but to jump over it next
time is what we need to learn. Greater change needs greater decision and our
life is shaped by greater and bolder decisions of our life.
This movie of one & half hours inspires us to hold on to something – happy life, family, love,
friendship, career, etc. – which motivates us to fight against all odds of life
to reaping the fruit of our endeavors and struggles otherwise man will be a
mere body carrying nothing but only the body itself.
