In 490 BC, Pheidippides ran 25 miles of
mountainous terrain from the battle field of Marathon to Athens with a message,
“the Athenians won the battle against the Persians”. His marathon signifies not
his valor but paradigm to exhilarate the spirits of gloomy Greeks. And so does
his story stem motivation for generations. Pheidippides had a message to share
and so do we. Pheidippides is a legend and so are we.

Our interaction to the world is like the
battle between pathogens and leukocytes. The pathogens charge against human defense
system only when phagocytes are activated and avert infecting human organisms. Referring
to Les Brown’s 3 C’s, we encounter change,
complexities and competition day
in day out, which influence the way we think, act and live our lives; in most
cases the worse. Only then, our defense system shall be activated to
self-communicate and motivate. But the story does not end here, the world
deserves to know story of each one of us to infuse metamorphosis influences on
lives of people for the better.

Last semester, I joined Employer Relation’s
Student Ambassador Group and initiated if-not-life-changing but a truly
pragmatic learning experience. This semester, I aimed at uplifting stance…the intuition
of joining Toastmaster Club emitted. Not resistance but inevitable I had on my
journal. I expected nothing but embraced a lot of things.

A few lines to sum up the blog
Attending the 24th meeting of
IICS Toastmaster Club, overcoming my xenophobia like always, my eyeballs spot “Reflection”, to know yourself inscribed on
the whiteboard. This reminded me Socrates’ motto, “know thyself” I studied in English lesson of high school. Let me
confess, I only watched some speeches of International Toastmasters on YouTube
knowing nothing other than that. I have now become one of the 313,000 members,
having joined 14,650 clubs spread across 129 countries (http://www.toastmasters.org/) and
foresee awesome journey with a culturally diversified Toastmaster Malaysia (http://www.tmdistrict51.org/).

With meeting topic “Reflection”, table
topics and project speeches centered on reflecting on 2014 and preparing for
challenges of 2015 and those of following years. It was enthralling to see
students of Taylor’s College in the meeting as I wanted to visit and learn
about Taylor’s College educational practices on my own. The speeches were
insightful and motivational and their presentations impressive and first-rate.

Hurrah, I did make my first Toastmaster
speech with 1 AH and 4 SO, which was announced by speech evaluators during
meeting evaluation – she was unlucky to have the toughest jobs, hah. Not to
surprise me, the other evaluator noticed (errr!) the problem of my “eye contact”.
God, I need to improve that for once and for all…

In project speech session, Winnie shared
her reflection of “persuader, demolisher and builder” as building blocks to her
work experience. Her formula to successful life is “H2O = 2 parts of heart
& 1 part of obsession as driving forces to live a successful life. But Jane’s
sentimental speech urged the idea of communication as need but not an option. Her
counseling experience with the Toastmaster Club president made her adapt that
strength comes from conquering one’s fear.

I whispered to my friend, “I am amazed at
his confidence…” Because Nicholas’ punch-points accompanied by his body
language, gestures and facial expressions made the audience listen. He laid
emphasis on, “Change is the only constant so we have to progress with change”. “…
but not his points” was the end part of my whisper.

Then came Adrian with Merry Christmas
& Happy New Year’s rhymes, but with a totally different version. His speech
was entertaining, personalized to many I know and a fact for some who can’t
bear it. His stand-out lines were, “I bought my friend a pair of sheets for New
Year’s; and my friend is my bed.” and telling us to kiss ourselves coz we
deserve it, “Kiss yourselves in the mirror”. Here is a short video-clip of his
speech.

IICS Toastmaster Club invited Jacy Wee,
the Executive Director of Globe Success Learning and VP Public Relations of
Toastmaster Malaysia to scrupulously evaluate the meeting. She urged the
participants to building their leadership skill which is the core mission of
International Toastmaster and plus points to better careers. To her career
success comes from “attitude, energy, commitment and fire within oneself” which
are explored and enhanced at forums likewise. I came to know by her that INTI
College Subang (IICS) Toastmaster Club received the President Distinguished Club Award within one year of its establishment.
Aha, I have high hopes of wonderful learning experience with club of such caliber
and prestige.

I made the right decision to join the
club to share my story, learn life-stories of others apart from mastering
communication and leadership skills. To my ignorance, I was in a hall with a
participant once gun-pointed and robbed, a winner of Toastmaster, a champion of
debate contests and admitting bravely his struggle to socialize on individual
level and many people who made my day.

No
more do we fear
more do we fear
For
ideas we bear
ideas we bear
Words
we share
we share
Shoulder
we offer,
we offer,
To
friends and foes
friends and foes
Life
we embrace
we embrace
Religion
we practice
we practice
For
world we own together
world we own together
And
better future we aspire
better future we aspire
