“In view of the cultural values
and with the increased literacy rate of women, Bamyan has great potential for
development – that has always been my impression about Bamyan.” These are the
words by Zahra Hussaini, who lives and inspires people in Bamyan, Hazaristan.

She is a role model for many with
her efforts and when asked what she thinks of Bamyan as general she quoted, “Bamyan
is the smaller province in geography, but is inhabited by people of bigger hearts,
more generous in acknowledging others’ rights and offers rich cultural and
historical attractions for tourists. What appealed me the most is, respecting
others’ efforts with open hearts.”

A girl at such young age speaks
great, “Despite the facts that long-winter season, remoteness and limited access
to markets, limited development budget & low human resource capacity have challenged
development in Bamyan, with gradual
increase in literacy rate, people will take responsibility for infrastructure
and socioeconomic development. Ultimately, Bamyan tourism, being a major source
of economic reform, will ensure sustainable development in the province. The government
and civil society need to collaborate to bring funds and socioeconomic development
projects not only to increase employment but also ensure Bamyan will achieve
development goals.”

Talking about women’s rights in
Bamyan, Zahra has a dream to see an increased number of women in government’s
senior positions, working in development organizations and contributing efficiently
and effectively to the development of Bamyan. However, this alone does not
help, she thinks women need to be fully involved with the changing fate of her
people through all means ranging from sports, cultural promotion, political
reform and the arts. Therefore, she pioneered bicycle riding campaign in Bamyan
being the first Hazara girl having initiated bicycle riding. She rides her bicycle
before the giant Buddha statues, she rides it through the small crowd in Bamyan
bazaar, she rides it to her university and work. It’s her guts making her take
such bold step and lucky enough she managed to influence some other girls to
join her campaign _ change for the better!

Her vision for her people is simple, “We deserve to live as we aspire!” |
Talking to our correspondent,
Zahra believes she initiated “Bicyle Riding Campaign” with a positive mind-set in view of the cultural
values of Bamyan and Hazaristan. Bamyan organized first bicycle-riding race “Tour
de Bamyan” but Zahra could not participate due to her minor operation. One can
confidently say, she was the inspiration behind Tour de Bamyan as people of all
ages, social-status and gender participated in the race promoting a positive
image of Bamyan.

Zahra needs recognition for her
social activism, education and human right awareness campaign and pioneering
bicycle-riding culture in Bamyan, Hazaristan. We honestly pray for her health
and well-being and look forward to see her with her bicycle.
